2026 Peter Ward Memorial Service Award Recipient: W. Edward Smith

At the 2026 CEB-US National Conclave, one of the week's most meaningful moments was recognizing W. Edward Smith as the recipient of the 2026 Peter Ward Memorial Service Award.

Named in honor of one of the club's founding members, the Peter Ward Memorial Service Award recognizes individuals whose lifelong dedication, leadership, and service have left a lasting impact on both CEB-US and the Epagneul Breton breed. This year's recipient exemplifies those qualities in every way.

As one of the original members of CEB-US, Ed has been an unwavering supporter of the club since its beginning. For decades, he has generously shared his knowledge, mentored fellow Breton enthusiasts, and helped shape the future of the breed through his commitment both in and out of the field.

Under the Smith Epagneul Bretons kennel name, Ed has bred and developed some of the most accomplished and influential Epagneul Bretons in the country. His breeding program has produced countless champions and exceptional hunting companions, leaving a legacy that can be found in pedigrees across North America.

Beyond his contributions as a breeder, Ed established the Joyce Smith Memorial Scholarship in memory of his late wife, Joyce. Awarded annually, the scholarship supports deserving high school seniors with roots in the Epagneul Breton community, ensuring that the values of sportsmanship, education, and service continue with the next generation.
